SCBWI

Read Local Challenge

Art is being created all around you. The person you meet at your local pool or pizzeria may have created your favorite book!

We invite all schools, libraries, homeschool groups, scout troops … groups of any size to join us! Take the challenge to read as many of these books from local authors/illustrators as you can, for a chance to win fabulous prizes, such as signed books and free Skype visits with one of our Read Local authors or illustrators. Then visit our websites to find our already-scheduled book signings and events, or to schedule a visit to your school or library.

All of our Read Local authors and illustrators have agreed to offer a 10% discount on their speaking fees for any school or library participating in the Read Local Challenge. Now is the perfect time to schedule a visit. We’d love to get to know you! Joint visits at special rates are also available. If you’d like to set up a special panel for your school or library, please email Veronica Bartles, Published and Listed Coordinator for the MD/DE/WV chapter of SCBWI at mddewv (at) scbwi (dot) org.

Sketch Crawl at Brookside Gardens

I met up with the SCBWI Illustrators yesterday and had great time at Brookside Gardens sketching on-site. We had a small group but attracted a lot of attention from other garden goers! Sometimes I forget how much I enjoy getting out of my studio and drawing in the real world AND experimenting with new media (colored pencils and brush pens today).Brookside Gardens brookside_photo

Speaking with SCBWI

This past weekend I had the opportunity to speak at a regional SCBWI event. I had such a great time sharing my experience with other members and getting to know my fellow writers and illustrators better. I wanted to share with everyone a blog post by one of our regional advisors about the event. Sue is amazing and I can’t wait to spend more time with her this year!

Having fun with SCBWI

This weekend I attended my regional SCBWI (MD/DE/WV) summer conference: “Creating Sparks: Kindle the Fire of Imagination” and I had an amazing time! I heard some wonderful presentations by the bubbly and funny editor Mary Kate Castellani and Rotem Moscovich who was so sweet and kind. I had the opportunity to me Agent Quinlan Lee and had fun laughing with her about how we both felt like giggly schoolgirls when we shook hands with literary rockstars like Richard Peck or Deborah Wiles. I also took a fantastic workshop with Illustrator/Amazingly talented jack-of-all-trades Jamie Zollars about collage and mixed media. It was so much fun to just be able to play with different techniques and mediums that I don’t usually use in my own studio. And we were all amazed by her hauntingly beautiful work and her willingness to share her experience with us. I had so much fun playing with collage that I’m considering incorporating some new ideas into my upcoming books. And even though I only had a short window of time I really liked the way my little experimental project turned out.

I love the SCBWI because I get to rub elbows with such amazing and talented people in the world of Children’s Literature and Art, and they are always so friendly and honest and love to share their experiences to help other’s in their journey. Thank you to everyone who taught, coordinated, presented, or participated in this past weekend’s conference. I walked away with a brain full of information, a notebook bursting with ideas and hands itching to get back to my paintbrushes.
